Do you have a general contracting license? According to a recently signed bill by Governor Roy Cooper beginning October 1st, it is a CRIME to perform general contracting work without first obtaining a license issued by the North Carolina Licensing Board of General Contractors. The North Carolina General Assembly has made it a Class 2 Misdemeanor for someone to claim or suggest a person or business has a general contractor license when they actually do not. First time offenders may be subject to fines and even a thirty-day jail sentence.
The new law also comes in light of new continued education requirements for general contractors. Beginning in 2020, general contractors will be expected to complete eight hours of continued education training as a condition of their license renewal. General Contractors need to be aware that failing to complete this requirement and subsequently working with an out-of-date license may have serious consequences. Before performing any kind of work, it is important to ensure your license is up to date.
